Brueckner Grundbau head office, Essen

A new administration building with underground parking

The building is on the so-called "M1 industrial estate", between Bottroper street, Hövel street and Bamler street in the Altenessen part of Essen. Until 1994 machinery shed number 1 (M1) of the former Krupp locomotive and wagon factory stood here.

The approximately 2900 sq m site lies at the corner of the streets “Am Lichtbogen” and “Zur Schmeide”. The office building extends over 3 floors with a smaller partial cellar floor. With its building form it fits itself onto the site according to the requirements of the design handbook that was set up for the whole estate.

The set back and roofed entrance area has been given transparency by selecting a façade completely out of glass which continues over part of the office facade. The fitted sunshade of horizontal aluminium sections which shade this area give the facade an exciting contrast.

The remaining facades have been constructed with rectangular windows in an insulated plaster compound system. The building’s circulation is achieved by a central stairwell which connects to classical hallways in the middle leading to the office units. Alternatively larger office units and team space work environments could be planned, showing that a flexible use is also possible.
