Spa Hotel, Rostock Warnemünde
Conversion of the former health resort hotel into a casino with attached catering
The health resort hotel in Warnemünde designed by the director of buildings, Berringer, and built in 1928 in the style of new realism, belongs to the most important architecturally historical buildings of this era.
With its gardens, which can be used as a concert venue, it still represents the cultural centre of Warnemünde, even after 70 years.
Within the scope of the complete renovation of the building carried out from 1997 to 1998, the competition requirements of the winning design were planned and realized by Nattler Architects working closely with the building heritage authorities.
With the reopening of the building, which houses Warnemünde’s casino, rooms for congresses and for events, a café and a restaurant with a sea-terrace as well as a distinctive bar with discotheque, the cultural centre of Warnemünde was restored.
The appearance of the building is defined by the contrasting dark strips of brickwork and white plaster. The clearly formed existing cubic building was preserved and was supplemented with light-weight transparent terrace extensions using modern stylistic idiom. In this way an attractive play with the materials plaster, strips of brickwork and glass and metal facades has been created.
Typical of the stylistic idiom of the building are the horizontally arranged parapet walls with strips of plaster and brickwork which were lavishly reconstructed.
The renovation of the health resort hotel has brought an important architecturally historical building in Rostock Warnemünde back to life again and given it an all-year-round use with the new building elements.
