A new residential complex for the elderly

The residential complex of five existing buildings was conceived as an apartment complex with 63 residential units for elderly or handicapped persons who want to live independently, but who cannot dispense with the security that the support and assistance facilities offer.

The arrangement connects the existing residential areas with their attractive outside space directly to the city centre of Bocholt. The buildings are embedded in an urban green belt, which is surrounded by preserved residential buildings from the 1930s.

51 single apartments as well as 12 double apartments were realized in two building complexes which run parallel to the ring road enclosing the city centre. Most of the apartments are accessed from semi-public galleries. All residential units have an attractive south or east aspect to the parklike inner area. The two residential complexes are connected by means of a single-storey pavilion for central services. This link forms the formative and communicative centre of the central inner area.

The administration and the meeting and cultural opportunities are accommodated in a listed villa. A small hall forms the transparent link between the existing building and the new building complex with a contemporary stylistic language. The buildings fulfil the requirements of the DIN 18025 part 2 regarding disabled-friendly living and are in conventional building style. The materials used follow the style of the regional material-mix of the Münster area.
