Local shopping and community centre, Borken
A new local shopping and community centre (NVZ) with retail and catering space.
The local shopping and community centre in Borken-Hovesath was planned in the context of the new residential estate with the same name to adequately supply the population with goods for their everyday needs.
The shopping centre lies south-east of the smaller structured residential area, shields this from the Weseler Street and, by doing so, provides visual as well as acoustic protection to the neighbouring properties. There are 158 parking spaces and good access for bicycles and pedestrians.
The building itself consists of two single-storey blocks divided by means of changing materials. The blocks are linked by means of a third, elongated block, resting upon and connecting the first two and aligned in the same direction as the houses in the neighbouring estate.
The elongated facades of the ground floor are defined by diverse materials. Coloured plaster surfaces dominate and there are glass and glass panel facades and, for the first time in Germany, joint less processed brick surfaces. The aluminium coloured and horizontally aligned metal facade of the upper floor is in contrast to all this.
Noise protection walls of wood in front of the delivery areas and the vertically aligned stair tower made out of industrial glass profiles further define the building.
Beside the discount stores ALDI, PLUS and Schlecker, a baker, a butcher, a snack food shop and a newsagents have established themselves. On the upper floor a fitness studio has moved in.
On the whole a building has been developed which fulfils an important urban planning and architectural use within this part of town, going beyond the pure local supply function.
