Minoritenplatz, Kleve

A new inner-city retail trade complex with offices and apartments

The planning originated in 1998 for the city centre extension "Kleve Minoritenplatz", as a further development of the city of Kleve’s urban planning targets as well as an analysis of the existing urban weak points.

Special priority was as given to the following planning considerations:
Providing a new pedestrian connection "Haus Koek-koek Spoykanal” to extend the existing pedestrian precincts to a closed circuit with internal connections through this central area by further crosslinks and connections to the adjacent urban area.

Completing existing fragmentary structures to become closed urban margins for public space.

Creating urban spaces with different qualities of experience, as conclusive additions to what already exists: streets, lanes, squares, and promenades etc. which can be reached on foot.

Including the element "water" in the urban planning design and so creating a further improvement in the residential quality in the adjacent bank areas.

Addition of a public-oriented entrance and presentation area to the existing city hall, to be a main part of the new extended city centre of Kleve and with access from all bordering areas.

Attracting anchor tenants as well as smaller rental areas as a suitable compliment to the existing retail trade.

Using modern contemporary design with regard to scale, materials and the use of forms in order to support the typical, unmistakeable impression of this city.
