Living in a moated castle
Renovation and monument protection in Aachen | 2004
The main castle and the outer ward of “Haus Heyden” moated castle originating from the 13th century was converted into 7 housing units in close agreement with the monument protection authority and therefore saved from decay. All fixtures were aligned with the existing substance of the building, in part individually manufactured, and represent an atmospheric tension between the old building and the new formal design.
Measures: Renovation of the wood ceilings and roof beams, partial exchange of the stonework or steam-cleaning of the walls, including repointing work, new window and façade elements, new housing technology, GFS: 2,500 m²
